It simply is surprising to find out that Bohol possesses at least 1400 discovered caves, and possibly many more which are still unexplored and unknown to man. Now dubbed as the ‘Cave Country’ by many, Bohol is one sure destination for cave enthusiasts, curious minds and thrill seekers alike. One of these ancient caverns happens to be the nearest one, the Hinagdanan Cave.

Located 15 km from Tagbilaran City, and 2.5 km from the heart of Dauis town, the Hinagdanan Cave lies hidden in Bingag in the town of Dauis. To get to Dauis, one will simply cross the bridge connecting the mainland Bohol and Panglao Island. The Hinagdanan Cave receives tourists from all places on a daily basis, because of its local popularity, as well as its easy accessibility.

The Cebuano word Hinagdanan means ‘laddered’ in English, because to enter the cave, one must have to go down a set of stairs to witness the enthralling scene on the inside, thus the name Hinagdanan cave. Underneath the cold earth, a pond silently glistens at the center; the deepest portion claiming to be 10 feet deep. The calm waters perpetually echoes back the sunlight that breaks through 2 separate holes on the ceiling. If viewed from an angle, one would be truly surprised that these holes remarkably resemble a pair of gleaming eyes staring at the cave.

In the clearing, a cluster of stalactites hang from above, matching the stalagmites rising from the ground below them. Spectators can take a dip into the water for a while, or enjoy taking pictures of the perplexing trails of Mother Nature.

To get there:
You can hire a tricycle or get on a bus/jeepney en route to Bingag in Dauis for an intimate experience and a chance to blend in with the locals. These public vehicles are found at their respective stations within the city. Ask a local for directions and he’ll gladly show you the way.

A metered taxi can also be rented, as well as ‘vans for hire’ to accommodate bigger groups. Taxis are found parked along malls and can also be acquired through phone for reservations. Vans for hire, on the other hand, are often seen at the city pier or airport, as well as at the Dao terminal.
